Fresh claims have emerged alleging that a good number of sitting Members of Parliament, both in the National Assembly and Senate, would seek reelection in 2022 polls on United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

According to deputy president Dr William Ruto’s, more than 150 MPs have announced that they would secure the party’s tickets in the upcoming primaries, in preparation for the general election.

Dr Ruto, who was speaking while grassroot politicians from Nakuru Town East, Nakuru Town West, Bahati, Molo and Rongai constituencies in his Karen residence on Thursday argued that the aforementioned number, majority of them from Jubilee and others from opposition parties have noted that they were on standby, waiting to defend their seats in 2022 using his party.

The DP also averred that the elected politicians had decided to associate themselves with his bottom-up economic model which seeks to empower poor Kenyans who engage in small scale businesses and small holder farmers by giving them capital.

“150 MPs have joined UDA,” said Dr Ruto.

This comes after standoff between president Uhuru Kenyatta and Dr Ruto occurred in the ruling party Jubilee, which led to division and fallout. The contentions occurred as a result of dispute over 2022 presidential succession politics and handshake between Uhuru and the former prime minister Raila Odinga in 2018.

As a result, Dr Ruto’s faction, which was referred to as Tanga Tanga, broke away. In 2020, the team rebranded Party of Development and Reforms (PDR), which signed a coalition with Jubilee in 2017, into UDA.

Dr Ruto has announced that he will use the party’s ticket to run for presidency in 2022. However, he will be subjected to nominations if other candidates declare interest in the seat.
